Malaysia remains steadfast in its commitment to reinforcing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)’s role in global affairs, fostering deeper strategic alliances, and enhancing regional cooperation amid growing geopolitical uncertainties, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized.

In his recent commentary, “Forging Economic Resilience in the Global South”, published on Project Syndicate on March 15, Anwar underscored the urgency of collective action in response to the erosion of multilateralism and the rise of distrust in international relations. Rather than accepting these challenges as the new normal, he advocated for a proactive approach to preserving peace and ensuring a stable international order.

As Malaysia prepares to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, Anwar outlined the country’s agenda to revitalize key regional dialogue platforms such as ASEAN+3 and the East Asia Summit (EAS). These platforms serve as crucial forums for constructive and neutral discussions on strategic and security matters among global powers.

He also highlighted the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) as a model for transformation, recognizing the region’s advancements in governance, national defense, technological innovation, and social progress, particularly in promoting women’s empowerment.

In line with Malaysia’s strategic vision, Kuala Lumpur is set to host the ASEAN-GCC Summit in May, an event designed to deepen engagement between these two dynamic regional blocs. This initiative reflects Malaysia’s broader objective of fostering stronger diplomatic and economic ties between ASEAN and global partners, reinforcing its role as a key player in shaping international cooperation.

With Malaysia at the helm, ASEAN is poised to navigate the evolving global landscape with renewed unity, resilience, and strategic foresight.
