The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has reiterated its unwavering commitment to assisting Myanmar in achieving a peaceful and lasting resolution to its ongoing crisis. In a joint statement, ASEAN leaders emphasized that the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) remains the primary framework for addressing Myanmar’s political turmoil and must be fully implemented to ensure an inclusive, Myanmar-led resolution.

Expanding Ceasefire and Strengthening Peace Efforts

ASEAN leaders urged all parties involved to immediately cease acts of violence against civilians and public infrastructure, calling for concrete actions to halt indiscriminate attacks and prevent further escalation. They stressed the importance of exercising restraint and ensuring the safety of all civilians.

Recognizing recent temporary ceasefires initiated by Myanmar authorities and other stakeholders, ASEAN leaders called for their sustained extension and nationwide expansion as a crucial step toward ending violence. This effort aims to create a secure environment for delivering humanitarian aid and fostering an inclusive national dialogue in line with the Five-Point Consensus.

To facilitate humanitarian assistance, ASEAN leaders underscored the need for safe, timely, effective, and transparent delivery of aid without discrimination. They encouraged continued support from stakeholders within Myanmar and cross-border efforts where necessary.

Furthermore, ASEAN reaffirmed its support for the ASEAN Chair’s Special Envoy, emphasizing the importance of cooperation among member states, external partners, Myanmar’s neighboring countries, and the United Nations. This collaborative approach seeks to address the broader impacts of Myanmar’s crisis, including transnational crimes such as drug and human trafficking, and online scams.

ASEAN leaders urged all relevant stakeholders in Myanmar to build trust and engage in inclusive national dialogue, fostering sustainable outreach efforts to achieve a durable, peaceful resolution that is Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led.

As ASEAN continues to navigate the complexities of Myanmar’s crisis, the bloc remains steadfast in its commitment to regional peace, security, and stability.
