Significant strides have been announced in the development of the ASEAN Power Grid, marking a pivotal moment for regional energy security and the energy transition towards a sustainable future. Two key developments, unveiled in Singapore, underscore the accelerated progress, particularly a new electricity interconnector project between Indonesia and Singapore.
This groundbreaking initiative involves a new subsea electricity cable designed to facilitate robust cross-border electricity trade between Indonesia and Singapore. This critical infrastructure directly supports Singapore’s ambitious goal of importing up to six gigawatts (6 GW) of low-carbon electricity from its regional neighbors by 2035. This projected import capacity is set to meet approximately one-third of Singapore’s total energy demand at that time, significantly bolstering its renewable energy imports and diversification strategy.
To further champion and streamline the development of essential cross-border power infrastructure, the Singapore Government has officially appointed Singapore Energy Interconnections (SGEI). As a newly formed government-linked company, SGEI is dedicated to specializing in the strategic planning, development, and execution of such vital interconnections, ensuring the seamless integration of regional energy sources into Singapore’s grid.
With limited renewable energy options in Singapore, electricity imports will be needed to meet our nation’s net-zero emissions goal by 2050. As power generation makes up around 40 per cent of Singapore’s total carbon emissions, electricity imports will play a significant role in decarbonising the power sector
The advancement of the ASEAN Power Grid represents decades of collaborative effort aimed at fostering a more interconnected and resilient energy landscape across Southeast Asia. These latest developments not only enhance the feasibility of large-scale renewable energy integration but also underscore the region’s collective commitment to sustainability and achieving long-term energy security through robust regional energy cooperation.
About the ASEAN Power Grid: The ASEAN Power Grid is a long-term initiative by ASEAN member states to enhance regional energy security and sustainability through interconnected electricity grids, facilitating cross-border electricity trade and the integration of diverse energy sources.
