The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has called on ASEAN member states to forge a collaborative and inclusive space ecosystem, emphasizing the strategic importance of regional cooperation in advancing Southeast Asia’s space economy.

A Unified Path Toward a Thriving Space Future

Speaking at the “Building the Space Ecosystem in Southeast Asia” forum—held as part of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology, and Innovation (AMMSTI) and the Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation (COSTI) 2025—BRIN’s Deputy for Development Policy, Anugerah Widiyanto, underscored the need for a unified approach to overcome technological disparities and regulatory gaps across the region.

“Every satellite launch is not just a technical milestone—it’s a step toward a competitive and sustainable space economy in Southeast Asia,” Widiyanto stated.

He outlined five strategic pillars to support this vision: talent development, legal harmonization, technological innovation, regional partnerships, and collaborative funding. These priorities aim to foster a resilient and future-ready ASEAN space ecosystem.

Shared Vision and Strategic Alliances

Widiyanto also highlighted Indonesia’s longstanding engagement in the space sector, dating back to 1976 with the deployment of communication satellites in geosynchronous orbit. However, he acknowledged persistent challenges, including uneven technological capacity and limited resources, which require a multidimensional policy response.

The event, organized by the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Space Technology and Applications (SCOSA), also featured remarks from Shaanti Shamdasani, CEO of Strategic ASEAN International Advocacy & Consultancy. She emphasized SCOSA’s role as a vital platform for knowledge exchange and policy alignment.

“ASEAN is well-positioned to lead in shaping an inclusive and sustainable space ecosystem through a unified policy vision,” Shamdasani said.

The SCOSA forum, held from 16–20 June in Jakarta, serves as a cornerstone for ASEAN’s science, technology, and innovation collaboration, reinforcing the bloc’s commitment to regional integration in high-tech sectors.
