Malaysia, in its capacity as Chair of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) 2025, has taken a bold step in advancing regional peace and human rights with the launch of the AICHR Thematic Study on the Right to Peace.

The study, unveiled during a high-level event on Tuesday, marks a pivotal milestone in ASEAN’s commitment to a rights-based approach to peacebuilding. It outlines key policy recommendations to support ASEAN’s initiatives in promoting human dignity, sustainable development, and regional security in line with the ASEAN Community Vision 2025.

“This thematic study is very important as there are still many regional problems and conflict in ASEAN and also globally. ” “Spillover conflict issues that become region-centric cannot always be considered internal affairs of ASEAN Member States.” said Edmund Bon Tai Soon, Malaysia’s Representative to AICHR and Chair for 2025.

The study also reinforces ASEAN’s proactive stance on addressing regional and international challenges, including the situation in Gaza and other intra-regional conflicts, by advocating for improved conditions on the ground.

In conjunction with the launch, AICHR will host a six-part Regional Training Programme on Human Rights beginning 2 July. Titled “Workshops on Intersection Between Conflict and Human Rights: Pathways and Approaches to Peace in ASEAN,” the programme aims to build the capacity of ASEAN officials in conflict prevention and peacebuilding through the practical application of human rights principles.

These initiatives underscore Malaysia’s leadership in promoting inclusivity, sustainability, and multilateral cooperation within ASEAN. They also reflect ASEAN’s strategic priorities to foster a resilient, people-centred regional community.
