A high-level trilateral meeting between Malaysia, Norway, and the ASEAN Secretariat convened today at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, reaffirming Norway’s growing influence as a strategic partner in ASEAN’s regional development and peacebuilding efforts.

The meeting, held in conjunction with the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM), marked the 10th anniversary of the ASEAN–Norway Sectoral Dialogue Partnership. Co-chaired by Malaysia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Datuk Mohamad Alamin, and Norway’s Deputy Foreign Minister, H.E. Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik, the dialogue underscored shared priorities in climate action, sustainability, and regional stability.

“Norway has been a meaningful partner since 2015, contributing significantly to ASEAN’s community-building efforts,” said Datuk Mohamad Alamin. “This meeting reflects our commitment to deepening cooperation in areas that matter most to our region’s future.”

Key highlights of the meeting included:

  • Peacebuilding and Diplomacy: Norway’s continued support for the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (ASEAN-IPR) and regional mediation initiatives.
  • Climate and Environmental Action: Collaboration on the ASEAN Climate Change and Energy Project (ACCEPT) and the ASEAN-Norwegian marine plastic pollution initiative (ASEANO).
  • Future-Focused Cooperation: Plans to expand joint efforts in digital innovation, circular economy, marine biodiversity, and green energy transition.
  • Social Development: Emphasis on education, youth empowerment, gender equality, and responsible business practices.

The meeting also advanced discussions on the upcoming ASEAN–Norway Practical Cooperation Areas (2026–2030), with all parties expressing commitment to ensuring impactful and coordinated implementation.

Held under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, the 58th AMM features 24 ministerial-level engagements and welcomes over 1,500 delegates from across the region and beyond.

This trilateral dialogue reaffirms ASEAN’s role as a trusted convener of global partners and highlights Norway’s evolving role in shaping a resilient, inclusive, and forward-looking Southeast Asia.
