Malaysia has officially launched the ASEAN Future of Maritime Conference, a landmark event convening regional leaders, industry experts, and policymakers to accelerate Southeast Asia’s transition toward green shipping and sustainable maritime trade.
Held during Malaysia Maritime Week 2025, the conference is co-hosted by Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport, the ASEAN Secretariat, and the Australian Government. It reflects Malaysia’s commitment as ASEAN Chair to drive inclusive, climate-resilient maritime development across the region.
“This conference is a pivotal step in shaping ASEAN’s maritime future—one that is safer, greener, and more connected,” said H.E. Tiffany McDonald, Australia’s Ambassador to ASEAN. “Through our Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I), we’re delivering practical action on maritime decarbonisation.”
Key topics include:
- Green bunkering regulatory roadmap to unlock investment in low-carbon fuels
- Zero-carbon shipping corridors and safe fuel handling frameworks
- Digitalisation and safety standards for resilient port operations
- Just transition strategies to ensure inclusive workforce development
Australia’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, H.E. Danielle Heinecke, highlighted the bilateral collaboration: “Our partnership with Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport exemplifies how regional cooperation can enable alternative fuels and regulatory innovation.”
Backed by AU$64 million (RM200 million) in funding under Australia’s Southeast Asia Maritime Partnerships initiative, the conference builds on technical cooperation launched in 2022. It also features support from the Malaysia Shipowners’ Association, reinforcing public-private collaboration.
The ASEAN Future of Maritime Conference positions Malaysia as a regional leader in green maritime transformation, aligning with ASEAN’s broader goals under the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity.
