Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has hailed the recent ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia as a defining moment for ASEAN, underscoring the bloc’s growing diplomatic clout and its central role in maintaining regional peace and stability.
Speaking at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Anwar emphasized that the immediate and unconditional ceasefire, brokered during a special meeting in Putrajaya, reflects ASEAN’s strength as a convening power and its ability to engage constructively with global partners.
ASEAN Diplomacy in Action
- Ceasefire Agreement: Thailand and Cambodia agreed to halt hostilities effective 28 July 2025, following Malaysia’s mediation.
- Global Engagement: The United States co-organized the talks, while China participated as an observer, signaling broad international support.
- ASEAN Values Reaffirmed: Anwar highlighted the importance of patience, trust, and steady diplomacy, calling the episode a reaffirmation of ASEAN’s founding principles.
“By upholding the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, we strengthen the peace dividend and ensure ASEAN remains a community of trust, cooperation, and shared prosperity,” Anwar stated.
Statesmanship and Regional Unity
Anwar commended Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai for their political foresight and leadership, which were instrumental in reaching the ceasefire. He also acknowledged the constructive roles played by US President Donald Trump and Chinese leadership, reinforcing the idea that peace is best achieved through dialogue and mutual respect.
ASEAN’s Centrality in a Fragmented World
The Prime Minister warned that ASEAN’s centrality and unity are not guaranteed, but must be actively sustained amid shifting global dynamics. He urged member states to remain committed to the bloc’s autonomy and shared values.
“In a fragmented world, our centrality and unity matter more than ever,” Anwar said, reinforcing ASEAN’s role as a stabilizing force.
Malaysia’s Global Spotlight
Malaysia’s leadership in brokering the ceasefire has drawn international praise, positioning the country as a key diplomatic player in Southeast Asia. The success of the talks has also elevated ASEAN’s reputation as a credible and effective platform for conflict resolution.
Anwar is currently in Indonesia for the 13th Malaysia-Indonesia Annual Consultation, accompanied by senior officials including Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
