In a landmark move to deepen regional integration and boost economic ties, India and ASEAN have officially declared 2025 as the ASEAN-India Year of Tourism, ushering in a new era of cross-border travel, cultural exchange, and sustainable tourism development.
Held in Johor, Malaysia, the 12th ASEAN-India Tourism Ministers Meeting (M-ATM Plus India) marked a pivotal moment in regional diplomacy, with ministers reaffirming their commitment to enhancing connectivity, simplifying visa access, and promoting people-to-people exchanges across South and Southeast Asia.
Visa Liberalisation and Air Connectivity Drive Tourism Surge
India’s outbound travel to ASEAN soared in 2024, with over 4.2 million Indian tourists visiting ASEAN countries, while 662,605 ASEAN nationals travelled to India between January and October. This surge is attributed to:
- Visa-free and simplified entry policies by Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia
- Expanded air routes and increased flight capacity projected to surpass pre-pandemic levels by end-2025
- Cruise tourism initiatives, including the inaugural ASEAN-India Cruise Dialogue held in Chennai
ASEAN-India Tourism Work Plan 2023–2027: A Blueprint for Collaboration
Supported by a USD 5 million contribution from India via the ASEAN-India Fund, the joint tourism work plan focuses on:
- Sharing best practices in sustainable and responsible tourism
- Enhancing tourism education and training
- Establishing crisis communication contact points and investment focal lists
- Promoting data exchange on tourism statistics and development strategies
Strategic Focus: Connectivity, Inclusivity, and Sustainability
ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn emphasized the need to reposition ASEAN as “one incredible region – connected, diverse, and culturally rich.” He called for co-branded campaigns tailored to Indian travelers, including:
- Bollywood-style escapes
- Spiritual trails
- Multigenerational family holidays
Cruise Tourism and Cultural Heritage in the Spotlight
Cruise tourism has emerged as a priority, with plans to develop a regional cruise network linking major ports across India and ASEAN. The initiative aims to showcase shared heritage, vibrant traditions, and dynamic tourism offerings that appeal to both Indian and ASEAN travelers.
