In a landmark move to strengthen legal cooperation across Southeast Asia, ASEAN law ministers have pledged to align regional laws governing artificial intelligence (AI), cybercrime, and cross-border dispute resolution. The commitment, announced ahead of the ASEAN Law Forum 2025, marks a pivotal step toward building a fair, inclusive, and digitally resilient legal ecosystem across the region.
Held from August 19–21 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, the forum will convene legal experts, policymakers, and civil society leaders to address the challenges of digital transformation and transnational legal vulnerabilities.

- Joint Statement on Arbitration and Mediation: ASEAN ministers will adopt a unified declaration to promote consistent and business-friendly dispute resolution mechanisms, particularly for trade and investment-related matters.

Malaysia’s Strategic Role
As ASEAN Chair for 2025, Malaysia is spearheading efforts to:
- Develop regional AI security standards through its National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO).
- Strengthen cybercrime intelligence sharing and joint operations via the ASEAN Regional CERT and upcoming security meetings in Melaka.
- Promote cross-border talent mobility to address cybersecurity and AI skill shortages.
