Vietnam and Laos have been named Southeast Asia’s top budget-friendly travel destinations by UK-based lifestyle publication Time Out, offering travelers a rich blend of culture, cuisine, and comfort at remarkably low costs.
In Time Out’s latest ranking of affordable travel destinations, Laos secured the top spot, followed closely by Vietnam. The recognition underscores both countries’ appeal to budget-conscious travelers seeking immersive experiences without compromising quality.
Laos: The Region’s Most Affordable Gem

Travel writer Lola Méndez, who has spent five years exploring the region, praised both countries for their exceptional value and cultural depth. “In Vietnam, you can travel in near-luxury on a backpacker’s budget,” she noted.
The ranking also highlighted Cambodia, Indonesia, and Thailand as affordable alternatives, while Singapore and Timor-Leste were deemed significantly more expensive.
