Malaysia has solidified its position as a regional trailblazer in artificial intelligence (AI) policy and innovation by hosting the inaugural ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit 2025 (AAIMS25), a historic gathering that marks a transformative moment for Southeast Asia’s digital future.


Held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), the summit convened over 1,500 delegates including ASEAN ministers, global tech leaders, academics, and youth innovators. Themed “Driving Sustainable and Inclusive AI Development in ASEAN,” AAIMS25 showcased Malaysia’s commitment to shaping AI through values of trust, equity, and regional identity.

ASEAN’s Unified Vision for AI

ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn praised Malaysia’s leadership, noting that AI could contribute up to 18% of ASEAN’s GDP by 2030. He highlighted the adoption of the ASEAN Guide on AI Governance and Ethics and the Responsible AI Roadmap, with Malaysia set to lead the formation of the ASEAN AI Safety Network by 2026.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim unveiled the AI Nation Framework, a cornerstone of the 13th Malaysia Plan (MP13), built on:

  • Forward-looking policies
  • Talent cultivation
  • Secure digital infrastructure
  • Digital trust
  • Strategic investments

Homegrown Innovation: Launch of ILMU

A major highlight was the launch of ILMU, Malaysia’s first multimodal large language model (LLM), developed by YTL AI Labs in partnership with Universiti Malaya. Trained on local data and languages, ILMU embodies Malaysia’s cultural and ethical values, outperforming global models in Bahasa Melayu comprehension.
Gobind emphasized Malaysia’s mission to democratize AI access:

  • Nationwide free AI literacy programs
  • Investment in local innovation ecosystems
  • Expansion of high-performance computing
  • Development of green data centers


The summit also served as a launchpad for:

  • AI Class ASEAN, a free regional learning platform supported by Google
  • The upcoming National Cloud Computing Policy (NCCP) to be launched on August 13
  • Ministerial roundtables and youth-led initiatives like the Youth AI Caucus and AI Code Fest
