Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim touched down at Tianjin Binhai International Airport this evening to begin a pivotal four-day working visit to China, signalling a heightened role for Malaysia in bridging ASEAN and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). A red-carpet welcome awaited the Prime Minister and his wife with a guard-of-honor reception befitting the diplomatic mission ahead.
Strengthening Regional Connectivity and Cooperation
At the invitation of President Xi Jinping, the SCO Summit convenes this year in Tianjin with Malaysia positioned at the forefront of ASEAN–SCO dynamics. As ASEAN Chair in 2025, PM Anwar is set to deliver remarks at the SCO Plus Summit, reinforcing Malaysia’s ambition to serve as a strategic fulcrum between the blocs.
During the summit, Malaysia plans to emphasize a joint vision of:
- Elevating ASEAN–SCO trade and investment ties
- Promoting economic integration and regional stability
- Enhancing diplomatic, people-to-people, and technological exchanges
These align with Malaysia’s broader ASEAN priorities and diplomatic leadership in the region.
A Consistent Vision of Bridge-Building
Malaysia’s commitment to connect ASEAN with strategic regional partners is longstanding. Earlier this year, under Anwar’s leadership, Malaysia hosted the inaugural ASEAN-China-GCC Summit—initiating institutional mechanisms for trilateral collaboration with Gulf nations and China.
China, recognizing Malaysia’s pivotal role, has expressed continued support for its ASEAN Chairmanship, entrusting Malaysia as a key coordinator in ASEAN-China dialogue.
Malaysia’s Strategic Vision Amid Global Shifts
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim succinctly captures the intent:
“At this defining moment, Malaysia is committed to building stronger bridges—between ASEAN and the SCO, and across all its partnerships—advancing economic resilience, cooperation, and regional unity.”
This Asia-wide vision resonates amid growing global protectionism, reinforcing Malaysia’s stance as a forward-looking, pragmatic leader uniting trade, development, and diplomacy.
Next Steps in the China Visit
- SCO Plus Summit Keynote (September 1): PM Anwar will deliver ASEAN’s perspective on unity and multilateral collaboration.
- Victory Day Commemoration (September 3, Beijing): Malaysia will take part in China’s commemorative events marking the end of World War II.
This visit reflects a synchronized diplomacy—following Malaysia’s National Day celebrations—to reinforce bilateral and multilateral relations.
