Embrace Borneo’s Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026 has been officially recognised by ASEAN Records for a marine conservation initiative that brought 17 contestants beyond the traditional pageant stage and into the waters surrounding Satang Island for a three-hour coral reef cleanup programme.
The programme achieved the official record title:
First Coral Reef Cleanup Programme Conducted by Contestants of a State-Level Beauty Pageant
(17 Contestants; 3-Hour Programme, Depth of 3–10 Metres; Satang Island, Kuching; 8 September 2026).
The recognition highlights a different approach to tourism pageantry — one that connects representation and public visibility with practical environmental responsibility, youth participation and greater awareness of Sarawak’s natural heritage.
17 Contestants Take Tourism Advocacy Beneath the Surface

The record-setting programme took place on 8 September 2026 at Satang Island, Kuching, where all 17 Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026 contestants participated in a three-hour coral reef cleanup at depths ranging from 3 to 10 metres.
Conducted as part of the pageant’s wider conservation tourism activities, the initiative was developed in collaboration with the Sarawak West Coast Diving Club. Beyond the underwater cleanup itself, participants were also introduced to marine biodiversity, beach conservation and the importance of responsible tourism.
Taking contestants into a marine environment gave the tourism ambassadors an opportunity to experience directly the relationship between promoting a destination and helping preserve the environment that gives it its appeal.
Moving Beyond the Conventional Pageant Format

Organised by Embrace Borneo Sdn Bhd, Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026 was designed as more than a conventional beauty competition.
Under the theme “The Face of Sarawak Tourism,” the programme combines tourism, culture, heritage, communication, creativity, community engagement and youth development to prepare participants to serve as tourism ambassadors for Sarawak.
Rather than focusing only on stage presentation, contestants are exposed to experiences connected to the places, communities and traditions they may eventually represent publicly.
The Satang Island initiative reflects that philosophy by placing conservation within the tourism ambassador journey and encouraging participants to understand that destination promotion also carries a responsibility to protect cultural and natural assets.
Conservation Becomes Part of Tourism Representation
For tourism destinations, environmental stewardship is becoming increasingly important to the long-term visitor experience.
Beaches, islands, marine ecosystems and natural landscapes form an important part of how destinations such as Sarawak are experienced and promoted. The Miss Sarawak Tourism initiative therefore placed conservation alongside more familiar ambassadorial responsibilities such as communication, cultural representation and public engagement.
Through the coral reef cleanup, the contestants were able to take part in an activity with a practical conservation dimension while also building awareness around responsible tourism.
The programme demonstrates how tourism-focused events can integrate environmental action into their core activities instead of treating sustainability solely as a supporting theme.
Youth Participation Adds a Wider Social Dimension
The recognition also brings attention to the role young people can play in communicating environmental and tourism messages.
Pageant contestants often possess public-facing platforms and the ability to reach audiences through appearances, events and digital media. When that visibility is connected with conservation activities, it can help introduce environmental topics to audiences who may not ordinarily encounter them through scientific or institutional channels.
For Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026, the Satang Island experience offered participants a tangible understanding of the ecosystems associated with the destination they represent.
This helps strengthen the idea that tourism ambassadors are not simply promoters of attractive places, but can also act as advocates for responsible visitation, cultural respect and environmental awareness.
ASEAN Records Recognition Presented at Grand Final

The ASEAN Records recognition was officially presented on 12 September 2026 during the Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026 Grand Final at the Riverside Majestic Hotel in Kuching.
The recognition was received by Ms Joeyce Hii, Director of Miss Tourism Sarawak 2026, and witnessed by Guest of Honour YB Datuk Snowdan Lawan.
The presentation marked an important milestone for the programme and formally acknowledged the effort to connect tourism representation with marine conservation and community awareness.
The Grand Final later culminated in the crowning of Ng Ka Sing as Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026, Jazlyn as Miss Sarawak Tourism Metropolitan 2026 and Angelyn as Miss Sarawak Tourism Global 2026.
Developing Tourism Ambassadors With Purpose
Reflecting on the wider purpose of Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026, Joeyce Hii explained that tourism extends beyond beautiful destinations to encompass the people, culture, heritage, stories and experiences that shape how Sarawak is presented to the world. ASEAN Records
She said the programme was created not simply as a competition, but as a platform to develop tourism ambassadors with the confidence, knowledge, character and ability to represent Sarawak locally, nationally and internationally.
That philosophy gives the crown a broader meaning. Representation becomes connected not only with visibility, but with an understanding of the communities, environments and cultural traditions associated with the destination.
The Satang Island cleanup gave participants a direct opportunity to put that principle into practice.
Tourism, Heritage and Conservation Under One Platform
Sarawak’s tourism identity draws from a combination of natural landscapes, cultural diversity, heritage and community experiences.
Miss Sarawak Tourism’s approach reflects this broader destination identity by exposing contestants to activities that extend across several dimensions of tourism rather than limiting the programme to stage-based competition.
The coral reef cleanup is particularly relevant because it demonstrates how environmental awareness can be incorporated alongside culture and heritage within tourism promotion.
By linking these areas, tourism ambassadors can potentially communicate a more complete message: visitors are encouraged not only to discover a destination, but also to understand and respect the places and communities they encounter.
Embrace Borneo Builds a Tourism-Focused Ambassador Platform
Embrace Borneo Sdn Bhd, the organiser behind Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026, positions the programme as a tourism-focused platform centred on developing young ambassadors capable of representing Sarawak’s people, culture, heritage and natural environment.
Its activities combine tourism experiences, cultural programmes, community engagement and conservation initiatives with the aim of creating impact beyond the pageant stage.
This broader format reflects an evolution in how pageants can be used as public engagement platforms.
Instead of concentrating exclusively on competition outcomes, programmes can also provide participants with experiences that build knowledge, confidence and a stronger connection with the destinations they represent.
Looking Ahead
The ASEAN Records recognition for Miss Sarawak Tourism 2026 demonstrates how a tourism pageant can become a platform for environmental participation, youth development and destination advocacy.
By bringing 17 contestants to Satang Island for a three-hour coral reef cleanup at depths of up to 10 metres, the initiative transformed conservation from a supporting message into a direct part of the participants’ tourism ambassador experience.
The achievement also reinforces a wider message for destination promotion: protecting a place can be as important as promoting it.
For Embrace Borneo and Miss Sarawak Tourism, the recognition provides a foundation for continuing to connect tourism with culture, heritage, communities and environmental responsibility.
As the newly crowned titleholders move forward in their ambassadorial roles, the Satang Island initiative stands as an early example of the responsibility attached to representing Sarawak — sharing its beauty with wider audiences while recognising the importance of preserving the natural heritage behind that beauty.
