The platform, introduced during Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, has rapidly evolved into a centralised gateway connecting students with higher education opportunities across Southeast Asia.
Within just one year, the total value of scholarships and university incentives available through ASEANGEMS has increased fivefold—from approximately US$5 million at launch to US$25.5 million by the end of June 2026. The growth reflects increasing participation from higher education institutions and growing confidence in ASEAN’s shared vision of enhancing educational mobility through digital innovation.
Simplifying Access to Regional Education
For many years, students seeking scholarships within ASEAN often faced fragmented application processes, requiring them to navigate individual university websites, varying admission requirements and separate scholarship schemes.
ASEANGEMS addresses this challenge by bringing scholarship opportunities together on a single digital platform, allowing students to compare financial assistance, tuition incentives and mobility programmes across participating institutions more efficiently. The initiative reduces information barriers while making regional education opportunities more transparent and accessible.
The portal is jointly established by Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) and Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education, with EMGS continuing to manage and enhance the platform in collaboration with ASEAN member states.

As of the end of June 2026, ASEANGEMS hosts:
- 1,934 scholarship and higher education offers
- A combined value of US$25.5 million
- Participating institutions from five ASEAN countries
- More than 57,000 visitors
- Over 69,000 page views
- Hundreds of registered users, with Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam among the most active participants.

The enhancement allows lecturers, researchers and academic institutions to identify regional research grants and collaboration opportunities, expanding the platform beyond student scholarships into a broader ecosystem supporting higher education, innovation and knowledge exchange.
