Leaders from across Southeast Asia have gathered in Kuala Lumpur today for the 46th ASEAN Summit, a high-level meeting aimed at reinforcing regional unity while addressing pressing geopolitical and economic challenges.

Key Discussions: Regional Security, Economic Growth, and Digital Transformation

Hosted under Malaysia’s ASEAN 2025 Chairmanship, the summit carries the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, reflecting the bloc’s commitment to fostering a resilient and people-centered ASEAN Community.

The summit’s agenda includes discussions on regional security, economic integration, and socio-cultural cooperation, with a particular focus on:

  • South China Sea dispute and maritime security agreements
  • Humanitarian crises in Myanmar and Gaza, affecting regional stability
  • ASEAN Digital Economy Framework, which will enhance AI governance, cybersecurity, and e-commerce expansion

Additionally, ASEAN leaders will engage in discussions with key stakeholders, including representatives from the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), ASEAN Youth, and the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC). These dialogues aim to strengthen collaboration between governments, young leaders, and the private sector to ensure inclusive growth and policy alignment across the region.

Strategic Partnerships: ASEAN-GCC and ASEAN-China Summits

A key highlight of the summit is the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2045, a strategic roadmap that will shape ASEAN’s long-term vision for economic and social development.

Malaysia will also host two high-level engagements:

  • The 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit, which will strengthen economic ties between ASEAN and GCC nations
  • The inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, aiming to foster inter-regional trade and investment collaboration

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his opening remarks, emphasized Malaysia’s leadership role in ensuring ASEAN remains relevant, responsive, and united in the face of global uncertainties.

As a fitting conclusion to the summit, leaders will attend a Gala Dinner, where they will experience Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage and savor local delicacies.
