The Philippines is fully prepared to host the 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings in Cebu from May 6 to 8, 2026, marking a significant moment for regional cooperation as ASEAN leaders convene to address key priorities shaping the bloc’s future.

The summit will gather heads of state and senior officials from across Southeast Asia, reinforcing ASEAN’s commitment to collaboration, resilience and sustainable development amid evolving global challenges.

Cebu Takes Centre Stage as ASEAN Convening Hub

The summit proceedings will begin with a series of senior officials’ meetings from May 6 to 7, culminating in the official summit opening on May 8.

To support comprehensive global coverage, the International Media Centre (IMC) has been established in Cebu as the central hub for both local and international media, with an expected 800 to 1,000 media personnel in attendance.

The IMC will play a critical role in ensuring timely, accurate and coordinated reporting, reflecting the significance of ASEAN’s high-level discussions to global audiences.

Balancing Excellence, Sustainability and Responsibility

ASEAN National Organising Council (NOC) Director-General Ma. Hellen De La Vega emphasised that preparations for the summit have been guided by a balanced approach — one that upholds ASEAN’s high standards while remaining mindful of sustainability and national priorities.

“As we carry out our international commitment, we continue to be mindful of our place in the scheme of things. Our preparations must strike a prudent balance — upholding the standards expected of the ASEAN Chairship while ensuring resources are utilised responsibly, sustainably and in service of our people,” she said.

This approach reflects a broader ASEAN ethos of aligning regional leadership with responsible governance and people-centred development.

Strong Government and Regional Support

The Philippine government has mobilised full institutional support to ensure the success of the summit.

Presidential Communications Office Acting Secretary Dave Gomez reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enabling seamless communication and media coordination, ensuring that developments from the summit are effectively shared with both regional and global audiences.

Local leadership, including Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro and Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Cynthia Chan, also underscored their readiness to host the high-level gathering.

Key Focus Areas: Energy, Economic and Food Security

ASEAN leaders are expected to prioritise discussions on critical regional challenges and opportunities, with a focus on:

  • Energy security and transition strategies
  • Strengthening economic cooperation and resilience
  • Enhancing food security and supply chain stability

These themes reflect ASEAN’s ongoing efforts to build a resilient, integrated and forward-looking regional economy.

BIMP-EAGA Summit to Strengthen Subregional Cooperation

In addition to the main summit, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will join leaders from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Malaysia for the BIMP-EAGA Summit on May 7.

This subregional platform is expected to advance cooperation in:

  • Trade and investment
  • Infrastructure connectivity
  • Inclusive economic development in border and growth areas

Preparedness Amid External Factors

Organisers have also confirmed that contingency measures are in place to address potential disruptions, including a forecast tropical cyclone, ensuring that summit operations remain smooth and uninterrupted.

At the same time, austerity measures have been implemented to ensure that the hosting remains efficient, practical and accountable, without compromising the quality of engagement.
